Made in 1937 by sculptor Ion Jalea, paid for by public subscription, the statuary group is composed of two elements: "Statue of Queen Elisabeta" and "Muse with harp".
In the 1950s, the communist regime decided to remove the statue and replace it with another work by the same artist: "The archer resting". In 1975 the piece "The Muse with the Harp" was exhibited in the center of Medgidia, while the queen's statue still remained in the basement of the Constanța Art Museum. Following the rehabilitation in 2013, the statuary group finds its place on the casino's waterfront.
Queen Elizabeth married Karol von Hohenzollern in 1869, becoming the first Queen of Romania in 1881. Princess Elisabeth von Wied, or by her literary pseudonym Carmen Sylva, was heavily involved in the life of the country, established hospitals, ambulance services, boosted the collection of funds for charitable purposes and promoted Romanian crafts.
